Matt Helm

Lucky for the female movie goers, sexy spy men have been around for decades to entertain us. Bulging muscles, suave language, cool with the ladies, attractive enough to enter our fantasies. The King of them all is the ever so popular Englishman, Bond, James Bond. For those who enjoyed the 60s we have Austin Powers. How can we forget Matt Helm, a U.S. government counter-agent—a man whose primary job is to kill or nullify enemy agents—not a spy or secret agent in the ordinary sense of the term as used in spy thrillers.

Martin played the part with his own persona of a fun-loving, easygoing, wisecracking playboy with plenty of references to alcohol consumption. Like the Bond films, the Helm movies feature a number of sexy women in each, in this case a group of “Slaygirls”. Bond films of the 1970s adopted the style and set pieces of Helm films while also mostly ignoring the plot elements of Fleming’s original books. The Martin version of Helm served as a significant inspiration for Mike Myers’ comic character Austin Powers and many references can be seen. Most significantly, both are fashion photographers as their cover jobs.

A true fan of the era  is Keith over at The Dino Lounge. The Dino lounge includes 100s of articles on The Rat Pack and others of that era, including info on their music, their film, their lives. Want to disappear into the past where big hairdos and tight mini dresses were in fashion? Where sex and fashion and fun were what was important? Head over to The Dino Lounge, pour yourself a glass of aged scotch and lose yourself.
